Here’s a tip nobody tells you when you start sketching again. Pick one small object on your desk and draw it five times in five minutes. It sounds too simple to work, but it loosens your hand up faster than any warmup video, lol!
That little trick is basically the whole idea behind this list. Sketching does not need a fancy setup or a perfect studio corner. It needs a page, a pencil and something worth putting on it.
I scrolled through way too many pins pulling this list together. Some ideas got cut because they needed twelve markers you’d never use again. The ones that stayed are doable with stuff already in a junk drawer somewhere.
Every idea below works for a rushed lunch break sketch or a slow Sunday afternoon. No art degree required, which is good news for most of us, haha!

Fruit Bowl Still Life
We’re starting off strong with a fruit bowl still life. Nothing fancy, just apples, a banana and maybe a stubborn orange that keeps rolling off the table.
My hand never gets the shading right on the first try, not once! This is the drawing that teaches shading better than almost anything else. Curved surfaces force you to actually pay attention to light. Worth the frustration honestly, lol!

Hand Holding Flower Sketch
A hand holding a single flower sounds simple until you actually try drawing fingers. This idea is these at its most romantic and honestly a little tricky, lol!
My first attempt looked like the flower was under arrest, haha! Sketch the hand loosely first before adding the stem, since a stiff grip ruins the mood. Barely held beats gripped like a weapon every time.

Skull With Roses Sketch
This skull with roses sketch is one of those cool these that looks harder than it is. The roses soften the whole thing so it never comes across creepy. If you were hunting for cool these, this one is a keeper!
I always shade the skull first, then wrap roses around the jaw and eye socket. My last one came out lopsided but nobody noticed! The contrast between soft petals and hard bone is the entire trick.

Aww! How sweet is this kawaii bear doodle? Round cheeks, tiny paws and a face that never fails to make people smile.
These are the doodles I fill notebook margins with during boring meetings. Nobody at the office has noticed yet, lol! Small victories count.

This chibi couple sketch belongs in the cute these category for good reason. Big heads, tiny bodies and expressions that carry all the emotion.
My proportions always drift back to normal halfway through, which defeats the purpose! Keep them exaggerated on purpose, since restraint just kills the charm here. That’s what makes chibi style work in the first place.

A baby penguin drawing is basically guaranteed to melt somebody’s heart. Round belly, stubby wings, big clumsy feet.

My blending always falls apart around the chin no matter how careful I am. It takes patience to smooth the two images together. The payoff is a piece that looks like it belongs in a gallery!

My brain still refuses to believe it’s flat even after I’ve drawn it myself! Draw the steps going one direction on top and the opposite underneath. It fools everyone at first glance, every single time, lol!
