You can keep it casual at home or go all out with a themed setup. Pick the details you love, then leave a little room for everyone’s own personality.

Halloween and fall family photo ideas

sunshine and pumpkin patch kisses

How sweet is this little pumpkin patch moment? I love the sunlight behind the child’s white bow and the orange pumpkins scattered across the background.

The pale outfits keep this fall portrait simple.

Try a close-up with everyone looking toward each other instead of straight at the camera.

matching pumpkin pajamas

If you want halloween family photos without putting together separate costumes, this one is for you. Everyone wears the same orange jack-o’-lantern print against black, with the children standing in front.

The hands-over-eyes pose is so cute. You could take a second picture as everyone uncovers their face.

a little trip to Oz

I am obsessed with this Wizard of Oz group. Dorothy’s red bows and blue checked dress look so cute beside the silver Tin Man, little Scarecrow and Cowardly Lion.

Keep everyone’s full costume in the frame if you try this theme. Those red shoes and fringed pant cuffs deserve their moment too.

a trio of pumpkin faces

These oversized orange pumpkin heads are quite the pair! The smaller pale pumpkin face in the middle gives the group a funny little twist.

For your own version, I’d hold pumpkin-face props beside everyone rather than cover a baby’s face. You can keep the ordinary outfits and green hedge backdrop.

witch hat and skull makeup

Want something a little spookier? The dark outfits, detailed skull-style face paint and wide witch hat bring this woodland portrait together.

I especially love the little dotted veil on the child at the front.

Try a close grouping so those smaller costume details stay visible.

two ghostly pups

The dogs get their own Halloween portrait too! These white ghost shapes beside the orange bucket are adorable, especially with both noses peeking out.

For a pet-friendly variation, place ghost decorations behind your dogs and set the bucket on the ground. You’ll still have that cute white-and-orange pairing without covering their heads.

farmers and a little cow

How cute is this farm theme? The adults wear checked shirts and wide-brimmed hats while the little one has a black-and-white cow costume with pink details.

The red barn-shaped wagon decoration is my favorite part. Include your larger props in the photo instead of cropping everything at the waist.

pumpkins along the porch steps

Don’t want to dress everyone in costumes? No problem!

This porch scene keeps things casual with a group seated beside orange, white, green and pale pink pumpkins.

I love how the pumpkins run down one side of the steps. Leave the other side clear for everyone to sit together.

cream and tan beneath orange leaves

This is a fall portrait rather than a costume photo, but those orange trees are too pretty to skip. The cream, tan and brown outfits look lovely together without everyone wearing the exact same thing.

Try mixing checks with plain tops if you want a similar family color palette.

red riding hood and the wolf

We have Little Red Riding Hood, a gray wolf and a little woodsman all in one picture. I love the long red cape beside the wolf’s raised paws!

A basket and a costume axe help tell the story. Choose a clearly pretend prop for the child if you’re trying this combination.

purple balloons and friendly ghosts

If you’re looking for a photo backdrop rather than an outfit idea, this one is for you. The black haunted house has purple hearts, orange windows and smiling ghosts floating above it.

I especially love the purple balloons mixed with black, cream and orange. For a family picture, you could move the little stool aside to make more room.

pumpkin carving in progress

Not every picture needs a finished jack-o’-lantern. This one catches the scooping stage, with pumpkin pulp on plates and a child laughing beside the table.

Take a few photos while everyone is busy instead of asking them to stop and pose. Let an adult handle sharp carving tools.

skeletons and surprise balloons

This setup uses skeleton decorations instead of people, with one in a blue shirt and another in a black dress and wig. Pink and turquoise balloons rise from a box marked with a question mark.

If you want a Halloween twist on an announcement photo, you could stand beside a similar display. The waving skeleton is such a funny extra touch.

a mushroom, a gnome and a snail

This woodland costume trio may just be my favorite. The giant spotted mushroom hat and tall red gnome hat are so fun together, plus the little snail shell is adorable.

Keep the clothes underneath simple if you want those oversized costume pieces to do most of the work.

mini pumpkins and a matching sweater

I love the little orange pumpkin faces on this child’s cream sweater. They match the mini pumpkins in the display so sweetly, with green pants adding another fall color.

Crouch beside your little one for a picture at their height. Holding a small pumpkin gives you both something to do with your hands.

ghosts at the playground

Looks like the ghosts have taken over the slide, lol! The sunglasses, sneakers and outstretched peace signs make this black-and-white photo feel playful rather than scary.

For your version, try a stationary pose beside the playground. Keep vision clear and loose costume edges away from the equipment.

a little wolf and red cape

Here’s another Red Riding Hood idea, this time just for the little ones. The gray wolf hood looks so cute beside the red cape, white apron and black crisscross bodice details.

The hand-holding is my favorite part. You don’t need an elaborate backdrop for a sweet sibling costume picture.

costumes and candy buckets

Who says everyone has to follow the same theme? This group mixes a blue dress, a dark hooded costume and pink cat ears, with bright candy buckets and an orange bag.

Let everyone show off their own pose before heading out. Those little claw hands are worth keeping in the picture.

a fence portrait with the dog

Here’s another costume-free fall option. I love the mix of checked shirts, plain neutral tops and blue jeans against the barn and grassy background.

The dog resting at the front belongs in the frame too. Try gathering beside a fence rather than lining everyone up shoulder to shoulder.

the whole ghost crew

Last but definitely not least, we have a whole group of ghosts at home. The wide outstretched shapes at either end make this picture especially funny.

For your own family version, keep faces uncovered on babies and young children. White outfits with ghost-face decorations would let them join the theme without anything over their heads.
