20 Christmas Movie Night Ideas With Themed Decor and Festive Treats

Looking for a few fun ways to bring your favorite christmas movies into your holiday plans? A Grinch tree, an Elf dinner or a cup of Polar Express hot chocolate gives you plenty to start with.

These pictures mix movie-inspired decorations and treats with a little on-screen style.

You can keep things simple or go all out. Pick one little detail for your next movie night, or give a whole corner of your home a festive makeover.

Christmas movie inspiration worth saving

a curly Grinch tree

We’re starting off strong with this super cute Grinch tree. I love the curved top with that big red ornament hanging from it.

The candy canes and little mirrored balls make it even more playful.

Try a red sleigh at the base if you want to follow this display. Don’t forget a spot for Max!

Little Nero’s movie snacks

The Little Nero’s Pizza box is such a fun Home Alone detail. Here it sits beside boxed macaroni and cheese, red soda cans and a large closed food box.

For your own movie night, you could serve pizza and macaroni and cheese. Keep the menu simple if decorating is the part you’re excited about.

Polar Express hot chocolate

How good does this look? The hot chocolate pours into a cup covered in colorful Christmas lights, with a red JOY sleeve around the middle.

If The Polar Express is on your watch list, try serving your favorite hot chocolate in festive cups like this. The cup alone is a lovely little touch.

an Elf dinner spread

I am obsessed with this Elf movie-night setup. There are big bowls of spaghetti and meatballs, bright green drinks and a printed menu right in the middle.

The raised serving trays are worth borrowing if your table has room. They let you spread out the snacks without hiding the menu behind dinner.

the famous leg lamp

If you love A Christmas Story, this one is for you. The glowing leg lamp sits on a crate marked FRAGILE, right beside a piano topped with a miniature village.

I especially love the black fringe around the shade. This is one of those decorations I’d let stand on its own.

Snoopy and yellow presents

How adorable is this Peanuts tree? Snoopy appears all over the branches, with Woodstock, Charlie Brown and shiny red ornaments tucked between the lights.

The yellow gifts with black wavy trim are my favorite part. Try that same wrapping idea beneath your own character-themed tree.

Snoopy’s light-covered doghouse

This is another cute way to bring Snoopy into your decorations. The red doghouse has oversized colorful lights around the roof and doorway, plus a reclining Snoopy cutout on top.

If you’d rather have one character display than a whole themed tree, take your inspiration from this little scene.

burgundy bows by the screen

Don’t want to go all out with character decorations? No problem!

This room has The Santa Clause 2 on the screen, but the decorations stick to greenery, tiny lights and deep burgundy bows.

I love how the bows carry from the mantel to the tree. The checked throw brings those same colors over to the ottoman.

Jack’s purple and green wreath

The purple and lime pairing is so cute in this Jack Skellington wreath. There are black-and-white stripes, checks and plenty of curled loops around his face.

Save this for a Nightmare Before Christmas night if you like a little Halloween mixed into your holiday decorating.

a Love Actually card

Sometimes one little movie reference is enough. This illustrated card borrows the sign scene from Love Actually, with “To me, you are perfect” across the front.

You could tuck a card like this beside your movie-night snacks as a sweet surprise. No big decorating project needed.

pink dress inspiration

I love the pale pink dress in this White Christmas scene. The full skirt, high neckline and gathered sleeves look so pretty with the ankle-strap shoes.

If you want to dress up for a holiday movie evening, take the pink color as your starting point. You don’t have to recreate the whole outfit.

a classic Santa portrait

Want a more traditional Christmas mood? Santa’s red suit and white trim stand out against the others’ dark outfits in this group portrait.

For a Santa-themed movie evening, I’d borrow that straightforward red-and-white palette for the table. A few festive napkins could be all you need.

a tiny snowy drive-in

This miniature drive-in may just be one of my favorite displays here. Little cars face a screen between snow-covered trees, with a colorful building in front.

Try arranging miniature cars in rows if you want to give your own Christmas village a movie-night corner.

Rudolph and a snowflake globe

How sweet is this little Rudolph? The bright red nose and big smile are adorable, plus there’s a clear globe with a white snowflake sitting in front.

A reindeer toy beside your snack tray would be a simple way to set the theme for a Rudolph viewing.

smiling snowman cupcakes

The little snowman smiles are just too cute. These cupcakes have white faces, orange noses and red Santa hats with white trim.

You could serve a similar design for a Frosty the Snowman evening. They don’t need to look exactly like a character to fit the snowy theme.

red hearts for a Grinch drink

This is such a cute detail for a Grinch night. A red ice tray with heart-shaped molds holds raspberries beside a lemon-lime soda bottle and a Grinch ornament.

For your own version, you could freeze raspberries into heart-shaped ice cubes and add them to a clear drink. Keep the ornament beside the pitcher as decoration.

Buddy and paper snowflakes

If you are looking for an all-out Elf setup, then this one is for you. White paper chains cross the ceiling, snowflakes fill the room and a large Buddy cutout stands beside the table.

That green chair cover with yellow legs is my favorite extra detail. Start with the paper chains if you only want to borrow one part.

garlands up the stairs

This staircase keeps things classic with draped greenery, red bows and gold-colored bells.

It’s lovely inspiration for welcoming people over for a holiday movie night. I’d keep those long bow tails.

a travel-themed white tree

This white tree has so much to look at, from the dark round ornaments to the travel-themed signs. The red telephone-box decoration beside it is especially fun.

You could borrow that London-inspired detail for a British Christmas movie evening.

Jack and Sally stockings

Last but definitely not least, we have these Jack and Sally stockings. I love the curled toes and the little Santa hats on both characters.

The black, red and white designs would look so cute beside the colorful Jack wreath above. Pick one or pair them for a Nightmare Before Christmas corner.
