Looking for a kallax bed hack that gives you more room for your things? These ideas include basket-filled cubes, hidden cupboards and shelves around the headboard.
There are finished bedrooms plus a few works in progress, so you can see the different layouts.
You can keep the styling simple or go all out with color. Treat these photos as inspiration, not building plans: shelving isn't automatically suitable for supporting a bed.
Have a qualified professional check the structure, fixings and any raised-bed safety requirements before recreating a setup.
Bed and Bedroom Storage Ideas Worth Saving
white cubes and a plain platform
We’re starting off with a look before the bedding goes on. A flat brown panel covers the white cube arrangement, with small round holes across the top and a tape measure resting on it.
If you're planning your own layout, measure the room as well as the mattress. Leave space to reach the storage without squeezing past other furniture.
baskets beneath a raised bed
How much storage inspo is in this one? Gray baskets fill many of the white compartments while books and a little red drawer unit break up the rows.
The bed frame and slats are visible above the shelving. I love the mix of open book storage and tucked-away baskets.
an open-center layout
Want to see the arrangement before the top goes on? This unfinished setup has long white units around an open center, with shorter pieces against the back wall.
It’s a useful view of the footprint, but the photo doesn't establish how the finished bed will be supported.
shelves around the headboard
I am obsessed with this headboard surround. The white shelves frame a dark gray wall, with photographs across the top and little flowers down the sides.
Keep your bedding mostly white if you want a similar look. That gray cushion is just enough to bring the wall color onto the bed.
green walls and trailing vines
If you love green bedrooms, this one is for you. The deep teal wall sits beside rows of trailing greenery, with gray-green bedding above white storage cubes.
There’s also blue light beneath the raised bed. For your own room, you could borrow the wall colors and greenery without copying the elevated structure.
pale green cupboard fronts
Don’t want all your storage on show? No problem!
These pale green fronts have little black circular openings, with light-colored trim around the edges.
This is a pretty direction for a kallax hack bedroom bed storage project if you prefer closed compartments. I especially love the green-and-white striped bedding above them.
side steps and photo fronts
This is one of my favorite finished looks here. The striped bedding, charcoal wall and white cupboard fronts look so good together.
Steps run up the right side while black-and-white photos decorate the front panels. Borrow that photo detail if you want to make plain storage a little more personal.
a bright blue headboard nook
How cute is this colorful bed nook? The owl bedding and flower-shaped cushion bring in plenty of pink, with a bright blue light under the upper shelves.
The tall unit on the left mixes cupboards, drawers and an open cube. Keep a few display spaces if you want room for little decorations too.
pink bedding and checkerboard storage
The blush pink and gray pairing is so pretty in this room. White and dark storage fronts alternate beneath the bed, with a round pink stool tucked into the middle opening.
I’d keep that mix of plain bedding and geometric pillow patterns. The gold-colored cushion adds a little shine without needing much else.
two rows of open cubes
Here’s another look at a setup before the mattress goes on. Two rows of white cubes face outward, with a large open space in the middle and a lower unit on the left.
If you like open shelving, plan which compartments you'll actually be able to reach. The finished bedding may cover some of the upper edges.
dark storage and a gallery wall
I love this darker bedroom with its gray bedding and crowded gallery wall. The black storage below the bed almost disappears into the shadows.
The draped ceiling and round hanging shade add even more detail. You could keep your own version simpler with the gray bedding, dark cubes and a small group of framed prints.
a cupboard beside the pillows
Don’t want to put storage under the whole bed? This narrow cupboard beside the pillows offers a different idea.
The open door reveals small shelves beneath a long brown ledge.

The adjustable wall lamp is a lovely detail too. Leave enough clearance for a cupboard door to open fully if you try a similar bedside arrangement.
a spotted wall and dark headboard
The spotted wall is my favorite part of this unfinished room. It looks so cute behind the wide dark headboard and pink curtains.
Below it, white compartments and exposed metal strips show a build in progress. Those visible strips alone don't tell us whether the structure is suitable for a mattress and sleepers.
lime walls and bold hexagons
Calling all bright-color fans! This lime wall and oversized hexagon pattern are anything but shy.
Orange, gray and black shapes fill the corner beside the window.
The white storage base is shown with exposed slats and open cubes. If you love the room’s colors, try gray bedding with an orange cushion once your own bed setup is safely complete.
a book-filled reading bench
This one is a reading bench rather than a bed, but the storage idea is worth a look. I love the dark seat and back cushions between the tall white shelves.

Books fill the open cubes while gray bins sit underneath. Borrow this arrangement for a separate bedroom reading corner rather than treating it as a sleeping setup.

a gray headboard and open storage
If you like seeing where everything goes, this unfinished setup gives you a clear view. Bags, books and other belongings sit in the cubes beneath the exposed slatted top.
The tall gray buttoned headboard is so pretty against the fine geometric wall pattern. I’d keep the bedding plain to let those two details stand out.
a light wood-look base
Don’t want a white base? This light wood-look version is a simple alternative.
The broad top extends slightly beyond the open compartments around its edges.
There’s no mattress here yet, so you can see the whole outline. Cream bedding and muted green cushions would be a lovely styling choice once the design has been professionally checked.
yellow accents and black bins
I am obsessed with the yellow in this bedroom. The bright wall and matching cushions look so cheerful beside the gray pillows and black window blind.
Black bins fill the white cubes beneath the bed. Try repeating one accent color in your bedding if you want to bring a bold wall into the rest of the room.
baskets at the foot of the bed
If you’re looking for a storage idea without raising your mattress, this one is for you. A low white cube unit sits at the foot of the bed with four brown baskets.
The striped bedding and cream throw are gorgeous together. Make sure you still have walking space around the end unit if you try this arrangement.
gray baskets and green lighting
Last but definitely not least, we have this gray bedroom with green lighting along the bottom of the storage. I love the matching baskets and the trailing greenery behind the pillows!
Dark curtains frame the window while pink cushions and a folded throw add a little color. Keep the baskets consistent if you want the same tidy-looking rows.
