20 Baby Art Projects With Little Prints and Colorful Keepsakes

p>Looking for baby art projects with tiny footprints, bright colors and something sweet to save? There’s plenty to choose from here, from purple butterflies to little footprint bunnies.

Some ideas are adult-finished keepsakes, while others offer inspiration for supervised painting or later toddler activities.

Keep an adult within reach throughout. Choose age-appropriate supplies approved for skin contact when making prints, keep paint away from mouths and leave cutting, small decorations and finishing details to adults.

Little prints and colorful art ideas to save

purple butterfly garden

We’re starting off strong with this adorable purple butterfly. Two footprints make the wings, with a black body and curly antennae between them.

I love the little flowers along the bottom.

For your own version, you could add a row of colorful flowers beneath the prints once they’re dry.

colorful paint over letters

How cute are these bright patches of blue, green, yellow and purple? The baby is pressing on a clear bag over a white background with large black letters.

If you try a paint-bag activity, seal and secure the bag, check for leaks and keep it away from your baby’s face. Stay right beside them rather than treating the bag as a toy.

little butterfly cards

Don’t want to add a whole garden? No problem!

These purple, pink, orange and yellow butterflies keep the background plain. The curly black antennae are such a sweet finishing touch.

Leave room beneath your butterfly for a name and date, just like these cards.

dots and paint smudges

This one is all about the little marks rather than a finished animal or flower. Red smudges sit beside pale green and gray dots on the white sheet.

You don’t need to turn every painting into a picture. For babies who still mouth everything, save open-paint activities for later rather than copying this setup.

footprint ghost pumpkin

OMG, how adorable are these little ghosts? White footprints cover the orange pumpkin, with black eyes and open mouths added to each one.

The toes at the bottom of every ghost are my favorite part. An adult could add the faces after the prints dry.

smiling purple jellyfish

I am obsessed with this little jellyfish. The purple handprint has a smiling face, pink cheeks and wavy lines between the finger marks.

Keep the pale blue bubbles if you want to follow this underwater idea. Those tiny details are lovely without filling the whole page.

fall tree on the window

Here’s one to save for the toddler years. A clear sheet is taped against the glass, with a brown tree shape and orange leaves gathered around its branches.

I love how the daylight shows through the picture. For a younger baby, you could make a finished tree display yourself and keep the loose pieces out of reach.

green handprint ornament

How sweet is this handprint tree? The green print has colorful jewel-like decorations, little silver-colored stars and a gold-colored star at the top.

A name and year make it a personal keepsake. Let an adult handle the decorations and hanging hook, then display the finished ornament out of your baby’s reach.

footprint lion face

This lion may just be one of my favorites here. Two pale brown footprints form the face, surrounded by a big brown mane.

The painted eyes and black nose bring it together.

This is an adult-finished picture built around your baby’s prints, so there’s no need to expect your little one to do all that brushwork!

handprint window garden

If you love bright colors, this window garden has plenty. Red and orange handprints surround yellow flower centers, with smaller pale prints along the grass and butterflies above.

You could borrow the same arrangement for a large sheet of paper instead of painting directly on glass.

red handprint bouquet

Who needs perfectly shaped petals when little handprints look this cute? These red cutouts have green bases and long green stems gathered with a red bow.

An adult could assemble a bouquet from dried prints as a gift. Keep the stems and tie as display details rather than things for your baby to play with.

footprint heart notes

If you are looking for a keepsake without lots of extra decoration, this one is for you. Red footprints sit inside pale heart shapes, with a handwritten message following the edges.

I love that the writing wraps around the prints instead of sitting underneath. You could use your own short message for someone special.

blue green and yellow dots

The scattered dots in this painting are so pretty. A tube with bubble wrap around its lower end sits among green, blue and yellow marks.

For a baby-friendly adaptation, an adult could make the dotted background around a footprint. Keep the pictured tool adult-held since loose wrapping can be a hazard.

smiling red lobster

How cute is this lobster? A red footprint makes the body, while two handprints become oversized claws.

The little smile and tall eyes are just adorable.

An adult can add the thin legs and connecting lines after the prints dry. I’d keep the background simple like this one.

green mistletoes and bows

I love the play on words here! Two green footprints hang beneath red bows, with red and green dots and snowflakes around them.

The lettering along the bottom ties the Christmas idea together.

For a version without attached ribbon, you could paint the bows instead.

taped color bags

Want a color activity without an animal design to finish? This setup has clear paint bags taped around their edges, with pairs of colors inside.

The blue and green combination is especially pretty.

Use this only for closely supervised awake play on the floor. Check that every bag is sealed and intact, keep plastic away from the face and remove it immediately if an edge loosens.

yellow footprint sunshine

This sunshine picture is so sweet. Two yellow footprints sit among the rays above a large yellow semicircle, with “you are my sunshine” written at the top.

You could add your baby’s name and the date on the back if you want to leave the front just like this.

turtles with dotted shells

The blue, green and yellow dots are so cute on these white turtle shells. Green heads, flippers and little tails peek out around the edges.

Save the pictured small stamping tools for an older child with close supervision. For a baby keepsake, an adult could cut a shell shape from an existing painting and assemble the turtle.

brown footprint bunnies

I know the butterfly prints are adorable, but these bunnies are a close second. Mostly because one faces forward with whiskers while the other shows a little white tail.

The bent ear on the right is worth keeping if you recreate the adult-painted details. It makes the pair look a little different from each other.

mommy and me handprints

Last but definitely not least, we have this sweet oval keepsake. A small dark pink handprint sits inside a larger pale pink one, with “Mommy & Me” above and a date below.

I love the pink polka-dot bow at the top. Display a finished piece like this out of reach so the ribbon stays a decoration.
