20 Colorful Nursery Ideas With Rainbows, Bright Walls and Playful Details

Looking for colorful nursery ideas that go beyond one bright wall? Think rainbow book shelves, a red rocking chair or little snails on a printed sheet.

These rooms and close-up details give you plenty to choose from, including play corners you can adapt as your little one grows.

You can keep things simple or go all out with color. Just separate the styling inspiration from the sleep setup: keep an infant’s crib clear of toys, pillows and loose bedding, with cords and hanging decorations out of reach.

Colorful nursery details worth saving

a rainbow wash of color

We’re starting off strong with this gorgeous rainbow wall. I love how the yellow fades into peach, pink and pale blue rather than stopping in straight stripes.

This is a play area with a little table and low storage. Borrow the wall treatment for your nursery if you want lots of color without a bold pattern.

green walls and animal portraits

How cute are those little animal portraits? The elephant, giraffe, zebra and tiger sit in a neat row above the green lower wall.

The brown crib looks lovely against that muted green. Try the same two-tone paint idea if you want to leave the upper half of your room light.

mustard yellow and sage

I am obsessed with this yellow and sage pairing. The large yellow canopy is the boldest detail here, with little animal decorations scattered across the green wall.

For your own nursery, bring that yellow into curtains away from the crib instead of copying the trailing canopy beside it. You still get that gorgeous color combination.

a peach ombre wall

If you are looking for something a little softer, this one is for you. The peach wall fades toward white above the crib, with a matching round cushion on the white chair.

Keep the rest of your colors pale if you want the wall to be the main detail. That little rainbow on the dresser is a sweet extra touch.

a playful gallery wall

There is so much to love on this gallery wall! The red faces, geometric letters and animal pictures all look a little different, which is exactly what makes the collection fun.

I especially love the black-and-white patterned chair underneath. Choose a few bright prints first, then mix in smaller pictures rather than matching every frame.

a bright green pear

Who knew a pear could make such cute wall art? The oversized green fruit looks adorable beside the blue curtains and tall giraffe.

The turquoise pouf adds another bright color at floor level. If you borrow the multicolored garland idea, keep it securely mounted away from the crib and out of reach.

green scallops and jungle animals

This green room may just be one of my favorites here. I love the pale scalloped border around the oval mirror, plus that yellow chair peeking in at the side.

The animal-covered rug gives you even more colors to work with. I’d borrow those details and skip the large hanging toy above the crib area.

a rainbow checkerboard rug

Don’t want to paint a rainbow on your walls? No problem!

This playroom brings the color in with a big checkerboard rug beneath pale blue walls.

For nursery decor ideas colorful enough to carry into a future play space, a rug like this is a lovely starting point. Pick one of its pink, yellow or blue squares to inspire your accessories.

a cherry-red rocking chair

I am obsessed with this red rocking chair. It’s such a pretty change from white, especially against the pale blue wall.

The dark cushion has loose white loops across it, with a shaggy white seat covering underneath. Keep those black-and-white details if you want the red to stand out.

pastel rainbows and smiling clouds

How adorable is this little play corner? The giant pastel rainbow ends in smiling clouds above rows of pink and mint storage bins.

I love that the striped rug repeats the wall colors. You could borrow just the rainbow and a couple of matching bins for a smaller nursery corner.

rainbow book ledges

The book lovers are going to love this! Pink, orange, yellow, green and blue ledges turn the book covers into part of the decoration.

That purple door is such a cute finishing touch. Try arranging some books by cover color if you want to follow the same rainbow idea.

a smiling yellow sun

This sun-themed nursery is just too cute. The large smiling sun sits above pale blue paneling, with smaller cloud shapes dotted around the room.

My favorite detail is the round blue rug with the cloud cushion on top. Keep cushions in the supervised play area rather than adding them to the crib.

pale blue stripes and red accents

If you love storybook details, this one is for you. The framed Babar picture sits against pale blue wavy stripes, with a red toy fire engine below.

I love the narrow red trim across the top of the patterned wall. It’s a small detail worth borrowing if you don’t want a whole red wall.

little rainbow circles

Don’t want to go overboard with wall color? This hanging decoration brings plenty of pink, blue, green and orange into a gray-and-white corner.

The folded circular shapes are my favorite part. For a similar display, choose an installation away from your baby’s reach and follow the mobile’s mounting and removal guidance.

green stripes and lilac walls

Okay, this color combination is gorgeous. Wide green and pale blue stripes meet a lilac wall, with more stripes on the ruffled cushions below.

This is a seating corner rather than a full nursery view, but there’s plenty to borrow. I’d start with the lilac and green if you want something different from the usual pastels.

teal drawers and scalloped shelves

This changing station may just be my favorite furniture idea on the list. I love the teal drawers with their gold-colored handles.

The yellow scalloped shelves are just as pretty.

There’s even a pink flamingo beside the dresser! Try one playful accent like that if you want to add another color without repainting anything.

flowers and butterflies

If you are looking for a garden-inspired room, then this one is for you. Leafy branches, pale flowers and butterflies fill the green wall behind the white crib.

The pink chairs and round pink ottoman look so pretty beside it. I’d keep those simple shapes so you can enjoy all the little details in the wall design.

snails and striped caterpillars

How cute is this print? The blue and green snails have bright spiral shells, with striped caterpillars filling the spaces between them.

This close-up is a lovely reminder that one patterned sheet can bring in several colors. Choose a properly fitted crib sheet made for your mattress size if you want to try the idea.

planning a painted arch wall

This one is still a work in progress. The blue tape marks out three tall arches around a corner, with small color samples inside and faint circular outlines on the right.

You could use the same planning idea before committing to a mural. Try a muted blue, peach and pink combination, or choose brighter shades for your finished arches.

orange circles and retro shapes

Last but definitely not least, we have this gorgeous orange nursery. I am obsessed with the big overlapping circles on the rug!

The orange chair and framed geometric pictures repeat the same colors.

The brown crib and dresser complete the retro look. Keep your larger furniture simple if you want to try a similarly bold rug.
