20 Mudroom Closet Storage Ideas With Baskets, Benches and Hidden Shelves

Looking for mudroom closet storage ideas that give your shoes, coats and bags a place to go? Think baskets above a bench, shelves tucked behind doors and hooks for the things you grab on your way out.

There are some pretty little details to borrow here too.

You can keep it simple or go all out with cabinets. Whether you have a narrow closet or a whole wall to work with, these ideas give you plenty to choose from.

Mudroom closet ideas worth saving

baskets above and below

We’re starting off strong with this cute little closet beside the stairs. I love the dark brown bench against the white paneling.

Matching baskets sit on the top shelf and underneath the seat.

Keep the middle open for hanging coats and bags on those black hooks.

a tall tower of baskets

If you are looking for lots of separate storage spots, this one is for you. There are cabinets up top, open cubbies underneath and a whole column of baskets beside the bench.

The lower drawers are worth borrowing too. You could give each person a drawer for their smaller everyday things.

shoe shelves and a hanging rail

How cute is this narrow closet? The shoes have their own rows below the baskets, with a hanging rail above for coats.

If shoes are taking over your entry, try a similar stack of low shelves instead of leaving one big opening at the bottom.

floral backing and a pink pillow

I am obsessed with this floral closet. The pink flowers, patterned bags and little pink pillow are so pretty together.

There’s storage here too, with a shelf above the hooks and a wide drawer beneath the cushioned bench. Try a floral backing if you want the inside of your closet to feel a little less plain.

cleaning supplies behind the door

Not every entry closet needs to hold coats. This one makes room for cleaning tools, bottles and smaller supplies, with baskets running down the inside of the door.

I especially love the little hanging spots for scissors and brushes. Give those small pieces their own place rather than dropping everything into one bin.

a door full of shoes

Don’t want to fill the closet floor with shoe shelves? No problem!

This black rack uses the inside of the door instead, with coats hanging in the closet beside it.

Check your door clearance before trying a rack like this so your shoes don’t stop it from closing.

burgundy shelves and bold pattern

This may just be one of my favorite closet interiors here. I love the burgundy shelving and those big cream outlines across the walls.

A narrow side section holds the vacuum while coats and shoes sit beside it. Keep that divided layout in mind if your closet needs to handle more than jackets.

a cabinet for bags and hats

If you’re looking for a way to put backpacks out of sight, go with a tall cabinet like this. The open door reveals hooks for a bag, hat and hanging clothing, plus a shelf above.

a low pullout shoe drawer

How good is this hidden shoe storage? A long, shallow drawer pulls out beneath the cabinets, with slippers and sneakers lined up inside.

If you’re planning new cabinetry, ask whether a low drawer like this could fit your layout.

clear bins on upper shelves

Here’s another look at the cleaning closet, this time with an idea worth borrowing from the upper shelves. Clear bins group the smaller supplies above the tall cleaning tools.

Try separate containers for cloths and dusting supplies. That way, you can pull down the group you need without moving every bottle.

three little drop zones

I love how each section has its own backpack hook, shelf space and pale baskets. The papers sit above the bags rather than getting mixed in with everything below.

Give each person a column if you want to try the same setup. A name label on the middle shelf could make the sections easy to tell apart.

an open bench and simple cubbies

Don’t want to go overboard with cabinets and drawers? No problem there!

This open closet keeps things simple with upper cubbies, a row of hooks and low shoe shelves.

The brown bench is my favorite part. I’d leave some of it clear so there’s still a spot to sit while putting on shoes.

dark blue and scalloped baskets

These scalloped baskets are just too cute. I love them against the dark blue interior, especially in the narrow stack beside the coats.

The lower cubbies hold shoes while the rail keeps jackets together. Try baskets with a decorative edge if you want a little detail without adding more things to the shelves.

blue-gray cabinets and a striped seat

If you have a whole wall to work with, this is such a pretty idea. Tall blue-gray cabinets frame a striped bench cushion, with baskets above and shoes underneath.

I especially love the small gold-tone knobs. Keep the center hooks open for a bag or the jacket you’re wearing that day.

a place for pet gear

Calling all dog owners, this one gives your walking supplies their own little setup. Harnesses hang across the top of the white pegboard, with collars and long leads below.

There’s even a separate strip beside the door for more accessories. Try grouping your gear by type so you can see what you need before heading out.

a brown curtain instead of doors

Don’t want a swinging door in a narrow entry? Try a curtain like this one.

The long brown folds cover most of the closet, leaving a glimpse of the hanging clothes and shelves.

I love how the curtain color works with the dark brown interior. Choose a similar shade if you want this understated look.

personal lockers with hidden extras

There is so much to borrow from these tall gray-green lockers. The open doors have display boards for artwork and small baskets attached below.

My favorite part is the row of pullout shoe drawers. You could give each person a locker and use the inside of the door for their notes or drawings.

olive cabinets and vertical stripes

I am obsessed with this olive and brown combination. The closely spaced vertical strips behind the bench look gorgeous with the simple gold-tone hooks.

Closed cabinets sit above and beside the bench while the lower cubbies stay open. I’d keep those cubbies for shoes you wear often.

tall coat space and shoe compartments

This green cabinet gives you two different layouts behind its doors. One side leaves a long opening below the coats while the other adds a shelf and small shoe compartments.

Try a divided setup like this if you need room for both longer hanging items and rows of shoes. The matching bench and hook rail beside it are lovely too.

blue-green panels and big baskets

Last but definitely not least, we have this pretty blue-green closet nook. I love the framed panels behind the gold-tone hooks!

Three baskets sit above the bench, with two larger ones tucked underneath. Try the bigger lower baskets for items you’d rather keep together than arrange on open shelves.
