Looking for vintage mantel decor ideas with a little more personality? Ornate mirrors, mismatched candlesticks and worn book covers give you plenty to work with.
These pictures include decorated fireplaces plus a few tabletop arrangements you can borrow details from for your own mantel.
You can keep things simple or go all out with greenery and gold-colored frames. Start with a piece you love, then bring in a few smaller favorites. There’s no need for everything to match!
Vintage mantel looks worth saving
layered mirrors and leafy stems
We’re starting off strong with these gorgeous layered mirrors. I love the ornate tops and the leafy arrangement in that chipped white planter.
The tall ivory candles look so pretty beside it.
Try overlapping smaller mirrors in front of a larger one to follow this look. Keep your candles unlit near the greenery.
twisted candles and mismatched holders
How cute are these twisted candles? The white, brown and dark green mix makes this little collection feel anything but plain.
This is a tabletop grouping rather than a finished mantel. Borrow the combination of different holder heights, then spread yours along the shelf instead of crowding them into one spot.
floral art and an oval mirror
This floral picture may just be one of my favorites here. I love the wide gold-colored frame against the brown oval mirror.
The little white pitcher is such a sweet addition.
Lean a smaller flower picture in front of your mirror, then add a leafy plant to one side and slender candlesticks to the other.
white pitchers and trailing greenery
Don’t want to add lots of different colors? No problem! Try a row of creamy white pitchers with greenery running around their bases.
The raised patterns and wavy rims are my favorite parts of this collection. Leave the pitchers empty if you want those details to be the main attraction.
a little clock on books
This one is a dining-table centerpiece, but that little clock and dark green book are lovely details to borrow. The white and orange flowers sit behind them beside a clear lamp.
For a mantel version, try the clock on a closed book with a small vase nearby. Leave out the table number so the arrangement suits your room.
tied books and a leafy sprig
If you’re looking for a small detail rather than a whole mantel makeover, go with this book grouping. The worn brown covers are tied together with a loose bow and a leafy sprig.
Try a similar bundle at one end of your mantel using books you’re happy to display. I’d keep the knot loose rather than pulling tightly around fragile covers.
pastel ornaments and a red reindeer
How adorable is this Christmas display? I am obsessed with the pale green and pink ornaments in the white pedestal bowl. That little red reindeer is so cute beside them.
The tall white vase holds evergreen branches, pinecones and more ornaments. Try adding a strand of silver-colored tinsel along your mantel if you want the same playful look.
purple flowers and an ornate mirror
If you are looking for something a little more dramatic, then this one is for you. There’s so much to love, from the tall ornate mirror to the purple flower clusters across the mantel.
I especially love the pale pink and blue tapers. Choose unlit candles for your own flower-filled version so you can enjoy the arrangement without flames near the stems.
butterfly art and amber bottles
I am obsessed with this collected look. The butterfly picture, amber-colored bottles and overlapping frames are gorgeous together.
There are trailing plants at both ends, plus a small stack of books beneath a pale sculptural piece. Try leaning a narrow print in front of your mirror if you want to borrow just one detail.

brown bottles and tiny pumpkins
Want to give your mantel a fall look without covering it in orange? This arrangement is for you.
Brown bottles, pale candles and little white pumpkins fill most of the shelf.
I love the patterned tray standing behind the books. Add one yellow-orange pumpkin like the one on the left if you want a small touch of brighter color.
paired portraits and autumn garland
These two portraits give this mantel such a distinct look. Their gold-colored frames stand out against the dark paneled wall, with a painted platter between them.
The autumn garland hangs below the shelf rather than hiding the pictures. Try a pair of similarly sized framed portraits if you like this arrangement.
overlapping boards and a round basket
This is another tabletop display with a detail worth borrowing. I love the different paddle shapes and worn edges on the boards, especially against that oversized round basket.
For a mantel adaptation, choose a few smaller display boards that fit securely on your shelf. You don’t need to copy the full-sized arrangement.
white flowers and little rabbits
How sweet is this white-on-white display? Little rabbit figures sit beneath clear covers between tall white vases of flowers.
The decorated fireplace surround is pretty all on its own, but that flower-filled swan below is my favorite part. Try the rabbit-and-vase combination for a spring mantel without adding lots of color.
turned shapes and a central photo
This is a lovely way to make your mantel feel more personal. A large photograph sits in the middle, with tall turned decorative pieces arranged on either side.
I love the rounded open frame behind it and the little trails of green over the front edge. Choose your own favorite photo, then add a few small pumpkins for a fall variation.
trophy cups and miniature trees
Who says trophy cups have to sit on a separate display shelf? These dark silver-colored cups look so pretty with little Christmas trees and a bright red ornament.
The smaller cup sits on a stack of brown books. Try using books beneath one piece if you want to copy the different heights.
face plates and a simple shelf
Don’t want to fill every inch of your mantel? No problem there!
This narrow shelf has an ornate pale vase at one end and two small brown vessels at the other.
The face plates on the wall are the fun part. I love how their green details bring a little color to the otherwise quiet arrangement.
trailing plants and a gold-colored frame
Calling all plant lovers, this one has plenty of greenery inspo. Leafy stems cover the mantel and trail down both sides beneath a large ornate mirror.
The pale bust is displayed on the hearth rather than squeezed onto the shelf. For a working fireplace, keep plants and other decorations outside the required heat clearances.
typewriter and layered papers
I love how much there is to look at in this tabletop arrangement. The dark typewriter sits on stacked books, with a carved frame behind the layered sheet music, sheep illustration and old-style photograph.
For a mantel, borrow the layered-paper idea first. Keep a heavy typewriter on a suitable sturdy surface rather than assuming your shelf can support it.
brown flowers and rounded pitchers
If you are looking for something simple to arrange, this one is for you. Large brown flower clusters fill the tallest vessel, with finer stems in the darker pitcher beside it.
The small pale pitcher stays empty at the front. I’d leave it just like this rather than putting flowers in every piece.
rows of candles and a gold mirror
Last but definitely not least, we have this gorgeous candle-filled mantel. I love the mismatched gold-colored holders and the leafy greenery spilling over the chipped white shelf.
The mirror reflects the candles behind them, with clock faces at the edges. For your own version, use flameless tapers around the trailing greenery.
