Looking for space saving bedroom ideas that leave room for more than your bed? Under-bed baskets, wall-mounted desks and narrow shelves give you plenty to work with.
There are bigger changes here too, including loft beds and built-in storage around the headboard.
You can keep things simple or rethink a whole corner. Start with what needs a home, whether that’s your shoes, books or a workspace.
I especially love the ideas that put an otherwise empty wall to use.
Bedroom storage and layout ideas worth saving
a desk beneath the loft
We’re starting off strong with this white loft bed and the desk tucked underneath. I love how the drawers flank the workspace, with more shelves above for smaller supplies.

If you’re considering a setup like this, check the ceiling clearance above the mattress as well as the sitting space below.
a wall-mounted workspace
How cute is that turquoise backing? This wall-mounted desk combines a projecting work surface with little shelves for books and supplies.
There are no desk legs taking up the floor underneath.
Try a bright backing like this if you want your workspace to feel a little different from the rest of the room.
cupboards around the bed
This bed surround may just be one of my favorites here. The white cupboards frame the sleeping area, while a narrow open shelf keeps books beside the pillows.
I love the tree-and-bird design behind the headboard. You can still have a pretty backdrop when storage takes up most of the wall.
baskets below the mattress
If you are looking for storage that’s easy to see and reach, this one is for you. Open cubbies beneath the bed hold matching baskets filled with folded items.

Choose baskets that fit your own bed openings, then use them for spare bedding or the small things that tend to pile up nearby.
a floating bedside shelf
Don’t want a full bedside cabinet? No problem!
This floating setup has a top for a book and glass, plus a lower shelf holding a sleep mask and small accessories.
The wall light is a lovely detail too. It leaves the little tabletop free of a lamp base.
shelves framing a single bed
I am obsessed with this little bed nook. Books and boxes sit above the bed, with a tall shelf-and-drawer unit along the left side. There are drawers underneath too!
The pink throw and string lights keep the storage-filled corner from looking plain. A desk fits beside the bed rather than across the room.
baskets on the door
Got bags taking over your drawers? This door rack gives clutches and small accessories their own rows of open baskets.
Try grouping yours by size so you can see each one. Just check that the filled rack won’t catch on anything when you open the door.
stacked beds and side stairs
If you are planning a shared bedroom, there’s plenty to save from this setup. Two lower beds sit side by side beneath an upper sleeping area, with stairs along the right.
I love the big drawers below the lower beds. Built-in bunks like these need proper planning for access, guardrails and headroom.
a tucked-away trundle frame
This pulled-out slatted frame shows another way to use the gap beneath a bed. It’s empty here, so you can see the frame rather than a finished second sleeping spot.
For an occasional guest bed, consider a compatible trundle and mattress. Measure the pull-out space before choosing one.
a shelf around the corner
Who says your books need a separate bookcase? Here, white shelves follow both walls above the corner bed, holding books and little vases.
The floral pillows are so pretty against all that beige. If you try overhead shelving, keep it securely fitted and leave enough room to sit up below it.
a wardrobe behind the headboard
This is a different way to divide a bedroom. A tall panel behind the bed separates the sleeping area from open clothing storage, with a walkway between them.
Save this layout if your room has enough depth. You’ll need usable space for the wardrobe drawers as well as a clear route behind the bed.
greenery on a high shelf
I love this trailing plant above the white headboard. The long dark shelf gives the greenery a home without adding another stand beside the bed.

Try a wall shelf for your own plants if bedside space is limited. Choose its position around the light your plant needs.
a wall light with a pleated shade
How pretty is this little pleated shade? The light hangs from a jointed wall bracket rather than standing on a table.
This is a lovely detail to borrow for a narrow bedside spot. I’d keep the pale shade and dark bracket combination just like this.
small round bedside tables
Don’t want shelves or cupboards around your headboard? No problem there!
This room keeps things simple with small round tables on either side of the bed.
The bed itself is substantial, so the detail I’d borrow for a smaller room is the compact bedside furniture. Each table has room for a lamp without a wide chest underneath.
two levels of hanging space
Make more use of your closet height with a layout like this. Upper and lower rails sit in two side-by-side sections, with narrow shelves down the left.
Try double rails for shorter clothes such as shirts and folded-over pants. If you have long dresses, leave a full-height section for those instead.
a tucked-in bed alcove
This little alcove is so pretty. The bed sits between paneled walls, with shelves above the pillows and drawers below the mattress.
I especially love how the surrounding storage shares the same muted color. The striped bedding and floral pillow add just enough pattern.
a tall narrow shoe rack
The shoe fans are going to love this! Instead of spreading pairs across the floor, these narrow shelves stack them beside the wardrobe.

Give your own collection a vertical spot like this if you have an unused strip of wall. Keep the pairs you wear most at an easy-to-reach height.
a wall of gridded mirrors
I am obsessed with the black grid around these mirrored panels. They reflect the bed, window and chandelier, giving the wall a sense of depth.
This one is more about how spacious a room looks than adding storage. A wall-mounted mirror is worth considering if a standing mirror would take up your last free corner.
a pegboard for everyday extras
There’s so much to love about this pegboard, from the hanging bags and hats to the little shelves. Even the slippers have a spot near the bottom.
Borrow the idea for a bedroom wall if your accessories keep landing on a chair. You can arrange hooks around what you actually need to store.

a pull-out daybed
Last but definitely not least, we have this daybed with a slatted section being pulled out from underneath. I love the simple white cushions and brown frame.
Consider an extending daybed if you want a smaller seating setup during the day. Leave enough clear floor space for the extended frame and check how its cushions form the sleeping surface.
