20 Living Room Interior Design Ideas With Color, Character and Pretty Details

Looking for living room interior design ideas that go beyond a new sofa? Think olive-green walls, shelves full of books or a gallery wall that wraps around a corner.

These rooms give you plenty to work with, whether you love pale neutrals or want a little more color.

You can keep things simple or go all out. Start with a detail you love, then decide how much you want to change.

Even a lamp and a few pictures can give you a lovely starting point.

Living Room Ideas Worth Saving

olive walls and cream sofas

We’re starting off strong with these gorgeous olive walls and cream sofas. I love the white window trim against the green.

The patterned cushions and large rug give you a little pattern without adding lots of different colors.

Try placing your sofas opposite each other like these, with a rectangular table between them.

a curved cream sofa

How pretty is this curved sofa? The rounded shape is my favorite part, especially beside that low table with its uneven edges.

Keep the cushions simple if you want a similar living room interior. The tall tree and long white curtains are already doing plenty here.

bookshelves with a little seat

I am obsessed with this built-in seating nook. It’s so cute tucked between the bookshelves, plus that pale blue seat adds just a little color.

Mix upright books with a few horizontal stacks on your own shelves. Leave some openings for plants rather than filling every spot.

dark green and brown

If you love a darker room, this one is for you. Deep green walls surround a brown rolled-arm sofa, with plaid cushions mixed among the plain green ones.

I especially love the little picture light above the landscape. Try one over your favorite framed artwork for a similar detail.

exposed beams and a red rug

There’s so much to love here, from the huge ceiling beams to the red patterned rug. The floral chair tucked beside the bookcase is such a pretty extra touch.

You don’t need the same ceiling to borrow the idea. Try a red rug with a gray sofa, then add a patterned chair if you want more color.

a slatted fireplace wall

This fireplace wall may just be one of my favorites here. I love the narrow vertical slats behind the floral picture and the long dark shelf underneath.

The cream seating and square ottoman keep the rest simple. A small tray on your ottoman gives you a place to group a few decorations.

green seating and mustard yellow

Who says you have to stick to one colorful piece? The green sofa looks so good with the rounded yellow chair and matching yellow pendant.

If you’re building an “interior design living room” mood board, save this one for its color combinations. I’d keep the orange and blue cushions too.

white seating by tall windows

I love this white seating arrangement beneath all those windows. The long pale curtains and oversized square ottoman are just as lovely.

Don’t want to add much color? No problem! Try a round brown tray and a small vase of flowers like the ones here.

low seating and simple tables

If you’re looking for a room without lots of little decorations, go with this low-seating idea. Pale sofas sit around a square brown table, with a smaller book table tucked beside it.

The tall leaning mirror is a detail worth borrowing. Keep the area around yours fairly clear to follow this look.

a gallery wall around the corner

How cute is this gallery wall? I love that the pictures continue around the corner instead of stopping on one wall.

Try mixing black, white and brown frames in different sizes. You can lay out each group on the floor first before deciding where everything should hang.

colorful posters and trailing plants

Calling all poster fans, this is such a fun wall to take inspiration from. The red, orange and black artwork looks gorgeous above the dark brown buttoned sofa.

There are plants on both sides too, including long trailing stems. Add one beside your sofa if you want to bring a little green into the mix.

blue cushions and beach pictures

This is such a pretty way to bring a beach theme into your room. I love the shell-shaped decorations between the framed coastal pictures.

Start with blue and white cushions if you want a smaller change. Then try a shelf with a beach picture, a little plant and one shell decoration.

a green chaise and gold details

I am obsessed with this green sectional. The buttoned back and long chaise look so pretty with the gold-colored tables.

The wall lights repeat that same gold color. You could start with a small side table and a matching lamp rather than changing all your lighting.

cream seating and a hanging planter

Don’t want to go overboard with color? No problem! Try a cream sofa, brown tables and leafy plants like this room.

My favorite part is the hanging planter beside the framed picture. It gives you something a little different to put above the sofa.

armchairs beneath an arch

How gorgeous is this little seating area? Two pale armchairs sit beyond the large arch, with a landscape picture and plenty of greenery behind them.

If you have a spare corner, try two chairs angled toward a small table. You don’t need an arch to borrow that part of the arrangement.

pink orange and wavy lines

This is one of my favorite colorful rooms on this list. I love the pink flower cushion, orange chair and wavy black lines across the rug.

There’s even a glowing wavy mirror beside the artwork. Pick a couple of these playful details for your own room, or go all out with the pink and orange!

a gray sectional and soft lighting

If you are looking for something a little more understated, this one is for you. The gray sectional faces a television wall with lighting behind the screen and beneath the floating cabinet.

Keep the artwork simple with three pale prints above your sofa. I’d add a cream throw like the one draped over this chaise.

botanical pictures and trailing greenery

The plant lovers are going to love this! Botanical pictures fill the wall above a brown cabinet, with trailing greenery spilling down beside the drawers.

Mix flower illustrations with leafy prints if you want the same variety. Those orange flowers look especially pretty with the colors in the rug.

sage paneling and facing sofas

This sage fireplace wall is absolutely gorgeous. I love the arched mirror above the shelf and the little wall lights on either side.

The facing sofas repeat the pale green, while floral cushions add some pattern. Try a low square coffee table between yours if you like this arrangement.

a green chair and record corner

Last but definitely not least, we have this adorable green chair corner. The framed records above the shelves are such a fun detail!

A curved floor lamp reaches over the chair, with pink flowers on the little round table beside it. Add a patterned cushion and striped throw if you want to follow the same look.
