Looking for rustic nature inspired mantel decor that goes beyond a vase of branches? Think pinecone garlands, little bird figures and bowls filled with seedpods.
These ideas include full fireplace displays plus smaller arrangements you can adapt for your own shelf.
You can keep things simple or go all out with trailing greenery. I especially love the weathered finishes next to white flowers. Start with one detail you love, then leave room for it to show.
Nature Inspired Mantel Ideas to Try
pinecones and berry garland
We’re starting off strong with this gorgeous green garland. I love the pinecones and red berries tucked between the branches, especially where they spill over the end of the thick mantel.
Pair a similar garland with stacked brown books and a lantern. For the tall candleholders, I’d choose flameless tapers near all that greenery.
pale logs in a dark basket
Don’t want to fill up your mantel? No problem!
This hearth-side basket gives you another place to bring in a rustic detail. The pale bark looks so pretty against the dark woven basket.
Keep a display like this outside the fireplace’s required clearance area, especially when the fire is in use.
dried stems and a handled jug
This handled jug may just be one of my favorites here. I love the pale dried stems above its rounded shape and the little seedpods gathered in the bowl below.
The arrangement is shown on a counter, but you could borrow the jug-and-bowl pairing for a mantel with enough depth.
little pots and tall tapers
How cute are these weathered little pots? The tall cream tapers and pale moss-like tufts make such a pretty combination.
For your own version, use flameless tapers rather than lighting candles beside dry decorative filler. Group the pots at slightly different heights to follow this look.

antlers and trailing greenery
If you are looking for an all-out woodland display, then this one is for you. There’s so much going on, from the pale antlers across the shelf to the long gray-green strands hanging over the edge.
I love the tall arched decoration behind it all. You could borrow just that backdrop and one antler accent if you want a smaller arrangement.
white flowers beneath a mirror
I am obsessed with this white-and-green combination. The flowers run along the mantel with rounded gray-green leaves spilling over the front.
A large paneled mirror sits above the whole arrangement. Keep your flowers low like these if you want plenty of the mirror to remain visible.
botanical pictures in mixed frames
Who doesn’t love a pretty fern picture? This collection mixes leafy botanical images with dark, brown and gold-colored frames.
For a mantel version, try leaning one large fern picture behind a smaller floral piece. You don’t need to recreate the whole gallery to borrow the idea.
a bowl of woodland details
This is actually one of my favorite little arrangements on the list. The long dark bowl is filled with pinecones, acorns, curling stems and spiky seed heads.
Set a similar shallow bowl on your mantel if you’d rather skip tall branches. Those little shapes give you plenty to look at all on their own.
pale driftwood garland
Don’t want to add flowers or lots of greenery? No problem there!
This garland mixes pale weathered pieces with smooth gray shapes along a thick rope.
I love how loosely it hangs against the white fireplace. Try a similar decoration across an unused fireplace, keeping it clear of any working fire opening.
white blooms in a weathered bucket
How gorgeous are these big white flower clusters? The chipped-looking finish on the pale bucket is my favorite part of the pairing.
This one is pictured on a kitchen counter. For your mantel, choose a smaller arrangement in the same style if the full bucket would crowd the shelf.
a layered garden jar
If you love tiny garden displays, this one is for you. The clear lidded jar shows dark soil, a narrow gravel layer and rounded stones beneath little green plants.
It’s so pretty with the smaller plant pots farther along the shelf. Treat this as display inspiration rather than a planting recipe, since plant needs will vary.
cream vases and a simple sign
If you are looking for something simple to pull together, this one is for you. A framed sign sits between a pale vase of greenery and two dark candleholders, with trailing leaves at the far end.
The larger vase on the hearth repeats the same pale color. That’s a lovely detail to borrow if you want to decorate above and below the mantel.
dark woven urns
I am obsessed with these two handled urns. The tall one holds an airy spray of narrow leaves while the smaller one is left empty.
You don’t have to fill every container. Keep one bare like this if you want those curved handles to be part of the display.
little blue birds and blossoms
Aww, how sweet is this? The three blue-and-cream bird figures sit in a twig nest with white blossoms spreading across the mantel.
Try the nest with a few flowering branches for a spring display. I’d swap the nearby candles for flameless versions around those twigs.
long trails of green
If you want to go all out with greenery, save this one. I love the mix of rounded blue-green leaves and finer strands hanging well below the shelf.
Cream candles sit among the foliage above. Use flameless candles for your version and reserve those long trailing pieces for a fireplace that isn’t in use.
log holders with little bows
These little log-style holders are just too cute. Each one has a glowing flameless light, a twine bow and a small green sprig with red berry accents.
Group three different heights at one end of your mantel to borrow this tabletop arrangement. The bows are definitely worth keeping.
small pumpkins and autumn branches
I love how loose and slightly wild this fall shelf looks. A pale pumpkin sits on a striped one, with long branches stretching behind the little pumpkin group.
The dried fruit-slice garland is such a pretty finishing touch. Leave some open wall above your own arrangement so those uneven branches have room to show.
clear candleholders and pebbles
Don’t want to decorate with branches? Try borrowing from this tabletop candle display instead.
Smooth brown, gray and cream pebbles surround clear holders in several sizes.
For a narrower mantel, I’d choose just a few holders and keep the pebbles in a shallow tray rather than scattering them near the edge.
tall branches beside the fireplace
This is another lovely way to decorate the hearth instead of filling the shelf. Tall pale branches and white cotton stems stand in a rounded brown-and-cream vase.

The white fireplace keeps the whole look simple. Try a similar floor arrangement beside an unused fireplace, or outside the required clearance area of a working one.
a landscape and leafy branches
Last but definitely not least, we have this beautiful landscape pairing. I love the leafy branches beside the river scene!
The cream vase and two dark candleholders leave plenty of the rough, golden-brown mantel showing.
