20 Modern Minimalist Open Concept Living Room Ideas to Inspire Your Space

Looking for a modern minimalist open concept living room that still feels like you? Think pale sofas, simple storage and a little color where you want it.

These pictures include connected living spaces plus smaller seating corners and dining details worth borrowing.

You can keep things neutral or bring in a bright green chair. From black-framed windows to rounded coffee tables, there’s plenty here to help you pick out your favorite details.

Living Room Ideas and Open-Plan Details to Save

low cabinets and trailing greenery

We’re starting off strong with this pretty row of pale cabinets. I love the oversized landscape above them and the trailing plant beside the curtains.

Try grouping a rounded lamp, a small vase and a few stacked books along your cabinet top. Leave some empty space between them to follow this look.

a console behind the sofa

How cute is this living room and kitchen combination? The long brown console sits right behind the pale sectional, with a dark island just beyond it.

If your sofa faces away from the kitchen, try a narrow console in the same spot. Keep a clear walkway between it and your island stools.

pink accents and a round table

I am obsessed with the little pops of pink in this room. The striped cushion and bright throw make the pale sofa look so cheerful.

A round white dining table sits beside the seating area rather than in a separate room. Try bringing one accent color into both spaces, like the pink touches here.

black window frames and pale seating

If you love big windows, this one is for you. The black frames look gorgeous beside the pale sectional and all those green plants.

The coffee table has baskets tucked onto its lower shelf. That’s a detail worth borrowing if you want storage without adding another cabinet.

arched glass doors

These arches may just be one of my favorite details here. The slim black door frames follow the curved openings, with another arch visible beyond the first.

This is a more separated arrangement than a fully open room. Save it if you like seeing into the next space but still want doors between the two.

nested tables and a corner sofa

Don’t want to go all out with color? No problem! Try a pale corner sofa with black cushions and a dark TV cabinet.

I love the smaller round tables tucked beneath the main coffee table. The black-framed chair repeats those thin dark lines without matching the sofa.

a bright green chair

How good is this green chair? Not gonna lie, it’s my favorite part of the room!

The low brown cabinet and clear-topped coffee table keep the rest fairly simple.

Try a little amber-colored lamp beside your TV if you like the glow shown here.

one leafy corner

If you’re looking for a simple way to decorate an empty corner, take inspiration from this tall leafy plant. The handled basket and otherwise bare walls are all this little spot needs.

Choose a plant suited to the light in your own room rather than picking by appearance alone.

pale dining chairs and twin shades

This is such a pretty dining setup to borrow for the space beside your living room. I love the two white shades above the table and the rounded vase of white flowers.

Keep your chairs in a similar pale shade to your sofa if you want to connect the two areas.

rounded furniture and rust accents

I am obsessed with these rounded shapes. The sofa, little chair and overlapping circular rug shapes look so cute together.

The rust-colored cushion picks up a color from the artwork above. Try that same idea with one of your own prints rather than adding lots of different accent colors.

three leaf prints

Want something simple above your sofa? These three framed leaf drawings are a lovely place to start.

I especially like the orange-brown leaves beside the darker outlines.

The pale sectional has just a few patterned cushions and a draped throw. You don’t need to fill every seat with pillows to follow this look.

a tall fireplace divider

This fireplace gives you a different way to separate an open room. The tall gray structure stands between the foreground and the seating area, with an open route along its side.

I love the triangular windows beyond the sofa. This is architectural inspiration to discuss with a professional rather than a small decorating swap.

dark tables and an open mezzanine

If you are looking for a room with plenty of details to borrow, then this one is for you. There’s a pale sectional, dark-framed chairs and a long low coffee table, with the kitchen and dining area behind them.

The small black vases and brown cushions are my favorite touches. Start with those if you like this look but don’t have the soaring ceiling.

storage around the TV

Don’t want lots of little things on display? This TV wall is a good one to save.

Long closed cabinets sit above and below the screen, with a tall cupboard at the side.

I love the single trailing plant on the open shelf. Keep a little space for something green rather than filling the whole ledge.

a red throw and mixed chairs

This is one of my favorite ways to add color without changing the whole room. The red-and-pale patterned throw stands out against the gray sofa.

The two chairs opposite it are different from each other too. Try mixing chair shapes while keeping the colors simple if a matching set isn’t your thing.

orange accents and a wavy mirror

How cute is that wavy mirror? The rust-colored chair, orange lamp and patterned throw give this pale living room plenty of personality.

You can borrow just one of those details. I’d start with the throw if you already have a neutral sofa you love.

a slatted plant divider

This is another way to mark the edge of a seating area without adding a solid wall. Tall brown slats rise behind a planter filled with white flowers and upright greenery.

The lighting beneath the planter is such a pretty finishing touch. Save this as fitted-divider inspiration if you’re planning a bigger room update.

pale seating beneath exposed beams

I love how you can see the living area, dining table and kitchen together here. The pale seating and light brown furniture keep the colors simple beneath those big ceiling beams.

Try repeating the same brown tone in your dining table and kitchen stools. You don’t need a vaulted ceiling to borrow that part.

black and white throughout

If you’re looking for a room without extra accent colors, go with this black-and-white idea. The white sectional has black cushions, while the kitchen repeats the same pairing in its cabinets and backsplash.

The big black rug is worth noticing too. It marks out the seating area from the dining space behind it.

a round table beneath an arc lamp

Last but definitely not least, we have this little dining corner beside the kitchen. I love the round pedestal table and the curved chair backs!

The black arc lamp reaches over the tabletop from the side. If you’re considering something similar beside your living area, check that its base and arm won’t get in the way of your walkway.
