20 Vase Decor Ideas Without Flowers, Plus a Few Looks to Adapt

Looking for vase decor without flowers? Empty vessels, leafy stems and little collections of shells give you plenty to work with.

I especially love the simplest ideas here, like a round vase on a stack of books or one big green leaf beside your sofa.

You can keep things simple or go all out with seasonal decorations. A few selected pictures do contain flowers, so those are flagged below with suggestions for a flower-free version rather than presented as flower-free arrangements.

Vase styling ideas worth saving

cream vases and tall branches

We’re starting off strong with this pretty grouping of cream vases. I love the different neck shapes and the tall, sparse branches.

Those green mossy balls give the pale console a little color.

Try grouping your taller vases toward the back, then leave a smaller empty one where you can see its whole shape.

bright lemon branches

How cute is this lemon arrangement? The bright yellow fruit looks so good against the green leaves and plain white vase.

For a similar decorative display, choose faux lemon branches and let them spread out to either side. There’s no need to add a ribbon or anything else around the vase.

a tiny green landscape

I am obsessed with this little terrarium scene. The fern fronds, moss and rocks are lovely, but that tiny winding staircase is my favorite part.

Save this as terrarium inspiration rather than treating it like a vase you can simply fill. Living plants will need a setup suited to their care.

twisting bare branches

If you are looking for something without lots of little accessories, this one is for you. The twisting branches spread out above a rounded gray-brown vessel, with pinecones and a candle below.

Give those curling ends a little room. I’d keep the wall behind them just as plain as it is here.

a round vase on books

Don’t want to put anything inside your vase? No problem! This little cream vessel looks so pretty sitting empty on a stack of books.

The narrow opening and round shape are enough on their own. Try this with a small vase you already have before buying any fillers.

pinecones with a little sparkle

The holiday decorating fans are going to love this! Brown, gold-colored and silver-colored pinecones fill a tall clear vase, with green sprigs tucked between them.

I’d use an LED candle beside this arrangement rather than a flame near the greenery and tied decoration.

shells in three sizes

This shell collection may just be one of my favorites here. I love the mix of spirals, ridges and pale pink markings showing through the clear vases.

Use different vessel heights if you want to follow this display. Keep some of your larger shells facing outward so their shapes don’t get lost.

a candle in a flared vase

Love the flared shape of this vase? Me too.

The pictured arrangement does include tiny white flowers around a lit pillar candle, so it isn’t a flower-free example.

For your version, leave out the flowers and choose an LED pillar candle. You’ll still get that pretty candle-in-a-vase look without placing a flame beside decorative stems.

pink citrus slices

Those pink citrus slices are such a cute detail! This picture shows an orange-and-white flower arrangement, so the full display doesn’t match the flower-free theme.

Borrow the citrus idea instead. For a temporary centerpiece, try slices in a clear vase with leafy stems rather than blooms.

colored bottles by the window

I love this little row of amber, yellow-green and deep green bottles. The leafy cuttings and visible roots make each one a little different.

Try mixing bottle shapes instead of finding a matching set. Choose your windowsill according to the plants’ light needs rather than copying the sunny spot automatically.

a vase full of corks

If you’re looking for a way to display a cork collection, go with a plain clear cylinder like this one. The corks sit at all different angles, with a small pile rising above the rim.

You don’t need to line them up perfectly. That loose arrangement is part of what makes this look so nice.

lights in a floor vase

How pretty are these little lights? A tall clear floor vase holds a loose tangle of illuminated strands, with more gathered near the bottom.

Try a light strand rated for this kind of decorative use. I’d place the vase somewhere it won’t get knocked over and keep the cord out of the walkway.

floating candles and green leaves

The little tray brings this whole grouping together. Two vessels contain visible flowers, so this is another picture to adapt rather than copy for a flower-free display.

The center cylinder gives you a starting point with its submerged green leaves. For your own version, use greenery without blooms and purpose-made floating candles in suitable holders, keeping foliage well below the flame.

spotted feathers and twigs

I am obsessed with those spotted feathers. They look so pretty mixed with the taller bare twigs in this cream pitcher.

Try decorative feathers in a few different heights, then let the branches extend beyond them. Keep the pitcher handle visible if you love that detail as much as I do.

hanging red and gold ornaments

This is such a fun way to use a tall vase for the holidays. Red and gold-colored ornaments hang at different levels inside the clear cylinder, with greenery, pinecones and orange slices across the top.

I especially love that the bottom stays empty. You can see each hanging ornament without adding more filler underneath.

a wavy cream vase

This vase is gorgeous all on its own. The uneven, wavy sides are my favorite part, especially with the sunlight catching the raised edges.

There are small pale flowers in the pictured arrangement, so it doesn’t fully fit the theme. I’d leave this vessel empty for a flower-free version and let that sculpted shape do the work.

a glossy brown vessel

If you love dark brown decor, this vase is worth saving. Its rounded body and narrow opening look lovely beside the little bowl and stacked books.

The branches shown have orange flower-like heads, so this isn’t a clearly flower-free selection. Try bare twigs in a similar spreading arrangement instead.

one oversized green leaf

Don’t want to go all out with a big arrangement? Look no further because this single-leaf idea is for you.

One large split green leaf rises from a clear bottle beside a book.

I love the shadow on the wall too. Keep the rest of your side table simple if you want a similar look.

coffee beans in a round bowl

The dark coffee beans look so pretty around the white candle in this rounded clear bowl. You can see the individual beans through the sides without needing a tall vessel.

For your own display, swap the pictured flame for an LED candle. You’ll keep the same look without a burning candle sitting among combustible filler.

empty vases on open shelves

Last but definitely not least, we have these lovely shelves with empty vases tucked between framed photos, books and little boxes. I love the mix of tall narrow shapes and round white vessels.

Try spreading your vases across different shelves instead of keeping them all together. A small one on a book stack is such a cute finishing touch.
