Looking for japandi shelf decor that leaves room for your favorite things? Think pale vases, dark bowls and books tucked beside little plants.
These ideas include open shelves plus a few cabinet and tabletop arrangements you can borrow for smaller spaces.
You can keep things simple or fill your shelves with pieces you love. I especially like the branch arrangements and little tea displays.
Sometimes one pretty bowl is all a shelf needs.
Japandi Shelf Ideas Worth Saving
baskets and curved shapes
We’re starting off with these pretty pale shelves and their mix of baskets and curved vessels. I love the little handled vase beside the wide pedestal bowl.
Try leaving a gap between each grouping like you see here. That wavy white dish deserves a little room of its own.
tall branches and pale books
How gorgeous is this branch arrangement? The bare stems stretch across the simple line drawing, with a round white vase holding them below.
Stand a few pale books beside your vase if you want to follow this look. Keep the smaller bowls and vessels grouped on the other side.
green bowls on repeat
I am obsessed with these green dishes. The speckled bowls and glossy plates look so pretty against the brown shelves.
If you have a collection you love, this is your sign to display it. Mix stacks of bowls with upright plates so you can see more than just their edges.
picture frames and earthy colors
Don’t want your shelves to be all white and beige? No problem!
This display brings in orange, honey-brown and a little pale green through vases, frames and bowls.

The small photographs are my favorite part. Try adding a framed photo between your decorative pieces to make the arrangement feel more personal.
neatly stacked dishes
If you’re looking for something simple, go with rows of stacked dishes. Here, brown bowls fill the upper shelves while pale plates and shallow bowls sit below.
I love that the stacks aren’t all the same height. You don’t need to make every row identical.
round trays and black vases
This low cabinet gives you a different kind of display space. I love the two round woven-pattern trays behind the black vases, especially with those tall dried stems.
For a smaller shelf, borrow just the pair of dark vases and one pale bowl rather than squeezing in the whole arrangement.
tiny staggered shelves
How cute are these offset shelves? A clear vase, small stones and candleholders are all they need.
Keep your own version just as spare. Flameless candles would be a lovely way to borrow the glow without an open flame on the shelf.
a bowl and flowering branch
This may just be one of my favorite arrangements here. The pale bowl sits on a small stack of books beside a rounded vase, with little blossoms spreading above them.

You don't have to fill the space above every object. That open section makes the delicate branch so easy to appreciate.
matching storage boxes
Want your storage to look a little more pulled together? Try matching pale boxes like these.
Two closed boxes sit beside the shoes while a larger open one fits beneath the shelf.
The dark handle is such a nice little detail. Choose boxes that fit your actual storage needs rather than adding them just for decoration.
overlapping abstract prints
I love these overlapping frames with their simple black marks and pale backgrounds. The small curved brown dish is just as pretty in front.
Try this arrangement on a cabinet top or a deep shelf. A short stack of books and one slim candleholder are enough to finish it off.
a little bathroom tray
Don’t want to add extra ornaments to your bathroom shelf? No problem there! Group your everyday pieces on a small tray instead.
This matching beige jar, cup and pump dispenser make such a lovely set. I’d leave the space around them clear, just like this.
three miniature trees
How adorable is that tiny tree in the middle? The three pots sit on a low raised stand, with the taller plants on either side.
Try a little stand like this if you want to group a few small plants. Choose a spot that suits their light needs rather than an empty shelf that happens to fit.
an open-loop sculpture
If you love sculptural pieces, this one is for you. The pale open-loop shape sits on a black base in front of a quiet abstract print.
I especially like the shallow dark bowl on the white books. Keep the rest simple if you want your favorite sculpture to stand out.
a ribbed lamp and white books
This little lamp is so cute tucked into its own shelf opening. The white books sit beside it while a black teapot gets a spot above.
The orange container below adds a little color without changing the whole look. Try one colorful piece if an entirely neutral shelf feels too plain for you.
short shelves above a desk
Don’t want to fill the wall above your desk? These short shelves are a lovely alternative to one big bookcase.
A white vase with dark stems and a few books decorate the upper row. I love that one of the lower shelves is left empty.
baskets inside the cabinet
There’s plenty to borrow from this open cabinet. Rectangular baskets sit beside folded cloths, boxes and a shallow basket of jars.
Give smaller items a basket of their own if you want a similar setup. The handled baskets on top are pretty enough to leave out too.
a small tea display
I am obsessed with this little tea setup. The white teapot and cups sit inside a smaller shelf unit, with a clear bowl above and a black kettle below.
The leafy plant beside it is such a pretty addition. Try grouping your tea pieces in one section rather than spreading them across every shelf.
photo strips and a glowing lamp
This bedside arrangement is so sweet. Two photo strips sit in the middle of a large brown-backed frame, with a glowing ribbed lamp in front.
You can borrow the same idea for a low shelf near your bed. I’d keep the little brown dish too, especially if you need a spot for small essentials.
trailing plants and book stacks
Love a shelf with lots of greenery? This long display mixes orange-brown pots with piles of books, letting the trailing leaves hang over the edge.
Try the combination on a shelf away from your sleeping area. Make sure the shelf is securely mounted and use saucers to keep water away from your books.
dark vessels and raised bowls
Last but definitely not least, we have this tall display with dark vessels, framed art and a little tea station. I love the bowls raised on arch-shaped stands at the top.
The framed print sits behind the smaller pieces on the middle shelf. Try that arrangement if you want to include art without giving it a whole shelf to itself.
