Looking for japandi study room decor that leaves room for your books without filling every corner? Think simple desks, pale walls and a few pretty details, from a rounded pendant to a little plant.
These images include full workspaces plus shelving, seating and lighting ideas you can borrow.
You can keep things simple or add a little more decoration. I especially love the green artwork and darker shelving.
Start with your desk, then choose the details you’d actually like looking at while you study.
Japandi study room ideas worth saving
a big round pendant
We’re starting off strong with this oversized round pendant. I love how it hangs above the simple brown desk, with a little white lamp tucked into the corner.
Keep a few books on a stool beside your desk if you want to follow this setup. The small leafy plant is a lovely finishing touch.
open shelves with offset dividers
How pretty are these shelves? The dark brown finish and offset dividers make even the empty spaces look interesting.
Try a few upright books between decorative bookends, then leave room for a pale bowl or plant. You don’t have to fill every shelf.
a desk against sheer curtains
If you are looking for something simple to put together, this one is for you. A muted gray-green desktop, pale angled legs and a white dome lamp keep the desk area understated.
The sheer curtains cover the whole window behind it.
a curved wall lamp
This wall lamp may just be one of my favorite details here. I love the long curved arm and rounded brown shade above the desk.
The clear chair keeps the space in front of the desk looking open, with drawers tucked beneath the desktop on the right. Try a similarly transparent chair if you’d rather not add another large block of color.
pale panels and leafy branches
I am obsessed with this pale study corner. The vertical wall panels, light desk and cream-colored artwork look so pretty together.
That big arrangement of leafy branches is the detail I’d borrow. For a smaller desk, try a shorter arrangement on one side so you still have space for your screen.
a little floor-level reading corner
Don’t want another desk but need somewhere to read? Try a low cream seat with a mustard cushion and a cream cushion with a mustard stripe.
The glowing exposed-bulb lamp is a pretty addition beside them.
The books sit on a round platform beside the seat. You could add a similar reading spot beside your study area.
branches and sculptural bookends
I love this shelf arrangement with its rounded vase and tall branches. The dark shallow bowl looks especially pretty on the stack of pale books.
Try leaning a simple framed picture behind a small sculpture on your own shelf. There’s no need to hang every piece of art.
a floating desk beside the sofa
If you’re looking for a study spot within a living room, take a look at this floating desk. The pale wraparound back panel sits beneath two dark shelves.
I especially love the black angled lamp and brown chair. Keep your desktop just as simple with an open book and a small vase of greenery.
vertical slats and tucked-away shelves
This study nook has so much to love, from the slatted wall behind the screen to the matching divider beside it. The thin strip of light along the top is a pretty extra detail.
If you’re planning a built-in workspace, save this one for the way the desk and shelves fit into the recess.
a rounded chair and shaded lamp
How cute is this rounded little chair? The pale seat and back look lovely next to the desk’s black angled legs.
A shaded table lamp lights the open book while a tall plant fills the corner. I’d keep that same mix rather than adding lots of smaller desk decorations.

a slatted sliding screen
This image shows a passageway rather than a study, but the sliding screen is worth saving for room-divider inspiration. I love the narrow vertical slats inside the darker frame.
If you’re creating a separate study entrance, a similar screen could be an option to discuss with your installer.
a window desk with a yellow lamp
That little yellow lamp is such a sweet addition! The pale desk runs across the window, with open storage tucked underneath one end.
Try one colorful lamp if you want a mostly neutral study with something a little different. The small framed pictures on the side wall are another detail worth borrowing.

an earthy gallery wall
If you are looking for lots of artwork inspo, then this one is for you. There’s a mountain scene, a leafy drawing and larger abstract shapes in brown, cream and black.
I love the mix of frame sizes above the long desk. Choose one larger picture first, then arrange smaller ones around it to try something similar.
three different pendant shapes
I am obsessed with these ribbed pendant lights. The tall, round and flattened shapes look so pretty hanging at different heights.
This is a counter area with a sink rather than a study. Borrow the lighting idea for your room if you like the look, without treating the counter as a desk.
low seating around a clear center
Don’t want every part of your study room to revolve around a desk? This lounge gives you another seating idea, with gray floor-level cushions along two sides of a large rectangular mat area.
The oversized leafy plant is my favorite part. You could borrow the seating arrangement for a separate reading corner.
speckled bookends
Sometimes the little details are enough. These irregular gray-and-cream bookends look so pretty around a small row of pale books.
Try a similar pair on your desk if you want to keep a few favorites out in the open.
green artwork and a round rug
This is actually one of my favorite study corners on the list. The green artwork with its loose white lines looks gorgeous beside the tall leafy plant.
A round rug sits beneath the chair and pale desk. Keep that shape if you want to follow this look rather than choosing a rectangular rug.
a mountain print and black accents
If you love darker little details, this desk setup is for you. The black dome lamp, vase and pencil cup look so good beside the brown desk and pale mountain print.
The tall shelving unit holds books and a few decorative pieces. I’d leave some gaps like these instead of lining up books across every shelf.
a long desk for two
Need room for two study spots? This long desktop stretches beneath both windows, with a screen at each end and open cubbies in the middle.
I love the matching brown chairs and pale window shades. Baskets like the ones below would be a useful addition for keeping loose supplies together.
white cabinets and pale shelves
Last but definitely not least, we have this simple built-in workspace. The tall white-fronted cabinets sit beside pale open shelves, with a little plant in the central niche.
This is a lovely idea if you want both display space and somewhere to put things away. Keep just your everyday items on the long desktop.
